The Solid Dose

Edition 3, 2021

Formulating Veterinary Medicines

For veterinary medicinal products (VMP), compliance and convenience are critical to ensure the success of prevention, control and treatment. There is a recognized need for highly palatable solid oral dosage forms, especially for companion animals that prefer pleasant-tasting medications and should be provided with safe and dependable VMPs. To improve the uptake of VMP and supplements Colorcon provides formulation insights to promote palatability and voluntary acceptance.

With chewable dosage forms for companion pets becoming more prevalent, Starch 1500®, partially pregelatinized maize starch, is proving to be a key excipient in VMP formulation. Benefits of using Starch 1500® in veterinary dosage forms include:

  • Neutral taste with good palatability
  • Good thermal stability, ideal for VMP soft chew manufacture
  • Imparts plasticity (ductility) to the dosage form and helps maintain these properties over the shelf-life of the product
  • No animal products/ by-products used in manufacturing Starch 1500
  • Reduced process and material costs by eliminating binders/ super-disintegrants/ high levels of lubricants & glidants

Colorcon has extended its flagship capabilities to animal health products, enabling formulation development from the basic core materials to the final dosage form. Whether developing a chewable or a tablet, our materials provide improved stability and taste-masking for animal pharmaceutical and supplement products.

Colorcon is proud to announce it has recently qualified as a Preferred Supplier with the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC).

Why Film Coat?

With over 1.4 trillion tablets produced per year (IQVIA Midas Report), every second of the day, someone is consuming a tablet (pill).

As the pharmaceutical industry evolves, Colorcon continues to lead with advances in film coating technology by the application of a thin, even, and continuous film around the surface of a tablet, creating an elegant finish, protecting, and allowing for branding and trademark opportunities. Film coating makes medicines easier to swallow, simpler to identify, enhances in-use stability, and masks unpleasant tastes.

Check out our latest video showing how easy the application of a film coating can be.
