- Is listed as either a direct or indirect food additive in an appropriate section of Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations (21CFR); or
- Is listed by the FDA in 21CFR as a prior sanctioned food material; or
- Is material determined by the FDA as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) by its listing in parts 182-184 of 21CFR; or
- Is the focus of an approved Food Contact Notification (FCN).
