Through our global Controlled Release Alliance with the Dow Wolff Cellulosics, Colorcon® offers an enhanced portfolio of extended/controlled release application expertise to find ideal solutions to our customers’ needs and help speed their products to market.

The alliance includes the exclusive global distribution rights for Dow Wolf Cellulosics' products, including  ETHOCEL™ premium ethylcellulose polymers, METHOCEL™ premium hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), and POLYOX™ water-soluble resins. Dow Wolf Cellulosics offers more than 50 years of experience in HPMC production, which is the most trusted polymer available for use in extended/controlled release drug delivery systems.

ETHOCEL™, METHOCEL™ and POLYOX™ polymers offer an outstanding range of extended/controlled release properties for a wide variety of dosage forms and processing methods. Many variations in molecular weights and chemical substitutions give you multiple ways to optimize formulation performance. Each range has fundamentally different hydrophilicity, swelling and erosion characteristics, to provide flexibility in control of the main mechanisms of release.

METHOCEL™ Premium Cellulose Ethers
METHOCEL™ cellulose ethers are the first choice for the formulation of hydrophilic matrix systems, providing a robust mechanism for the extended/controlled release of drugs from oral solid dosage forms. With a choice of viscosity grades METHOCEL™ provides a simple solution to meet a range of drug solubility needs.

ETHOCEL™ Premium Ethylcellulose Polymers
Ethylcellulose has been used as an extended/controlled release excipient for several decades. In most applications, ethylcellulose has been solubilized in an organic solvent(s) and used as a film coating for tablets, beads, and particles to impart an extended/controlled release or taste-masking effect. ETHOCEL™ FP polymers were developed specifically for use as excipients in extended/controlled release matrix formulations. As water insoluble excipients, ETHOCEL™ polymers can effectively control the release of an active by modifying the size and length of the diffusion path. In this role, ETHOCEL™ polymer is typically used in combination with water-soluble actives and/or water-soluble excipients such as METHOCEL™ cellulose ethers.

POLYOX™ Water-Soluble Resins
POLYOX™ offers a history of successful use in extended/controlled release applications of osmotic pump technologies, hydrophilic matrices, and gastro-retentive dosage forms.

HyperStart® Oral Solid Dose Formulation Service
HyperStart is a unique modeling service specially designed to provide customers with a starting formulation for hydrophilic matrix tablets, the most popular and trusted controlled release platform. HyperStart pulls from Colorcon’s years of experience, research and testing to offer proven formulations that are quick and simple to develop, easy to manufacture and compliant with all regulations, saving you time and effort. By reducing the time spent on initial formulation, the development process will be shortened, getting your product to market faster.

Contact Colorcon to learn more about rate controlling polymers for extended/controlled release drug delivery systems and how our HyperStart service can get your product to market faster and more efficiently.
